LIEBFEUER was started by Obi Ejiofor, Gabriel Loewe and Erhan Gunay with the objective of creating
high-grade charcoal for the European market using responsibly sourced African hardwood. Erhan Gunay,
a member of the European Charcoal Burners Association, noticed a gap in the market for high-grade hardwood charcoal of consistent quality. He approached Gabriel Loewe, the owner of the rights to the
ETGO twin retort oven, with the idea of using his technology to produce consistently high-quality charcoal
in Nigeria, where some of the best hardwoods are to be found. They then approached Obi Ejiofor, who
owned land in Nigeria, with the aim of cultivating plantations to create a sustainable supply of trees.

In May 2017, the ETGO charcoal facility was born in Aboghazi Nike, eastern Nigeria, after several years of construction. It is the first charcoal facility of its kind using twin retort oven technology to be built in Nigeria.

Twin retort technology means that an external energy supply is not required for production. The gases emitted from one chamber are recycled to fire up the other chamber, rendering the production process
98% emission-free. Thus, the entire process is virtually carbon-neutral.

Our finished charcoal has a maximum moisture content of 5%. This low moisture content is maintained
in production throughout the year, even during the rainy season. To help ensure this standard, the wood
is stored in the drying chamber prior to pyrolysis.

Our raw materials are a combination of waste hardwood and wood supply from our own plantation.

Three tonnes of untreated wood are used to produce one tonne of barbecue charcoal.

In the ovens, the untreated wood is heated to a temperature between 700 °C and 800 °C under exclusion
of air. This results in a much higher charcoaling temperature – at least 200 °C more – than with
traditional charcoal kilns or earth mounds.

ETGO recognises the negative impact charcoal production techniques can have on the environment and we also recognise the economic importance charcoal production can have in the development of rural African communities. For these reasons, we have developed a CSR policy for our business which includes:

  • Utilising the most sustainable methods possible of energy, wood, and agricultural resource management within our production process
  • Harvesting all raw materials in the most responsible and sustainable manner to reduce land degradation, deforestation, erosion and reduction in soil fertility
  • During the charcoal production process, reducing the emissions of products of incomplete combustion (PICs), carbon dioxide, gases and tars, etc., which contribute to global warming
  • Capacity building within the local community, including investments in education, health, sports development, housing, roads, local water, electricity and other community services
  • We support the local community by transferring technical know-how and providing training in pruning techniques, the use of fertilisers and fire prevention
  • Providing safe and healthy working conditions for all employees
  • Partnership and investment in local afforestation and reforestation schemes
  • We package using only recycled paper

  • High carbon content of 85–90%, enabling barbecue charcoal to get hot faster and maintain a high temperature longer for more effective grilling
  • Very low ash and moisture content
  • Quick lighting
  • Low volatile matter, so very little smoke production in grilling
  • Even burning and heat distribution
  • Any charcoal not completely burned during grilling may be put out and re-lit on another occasion for more grilling
  • Imparts a purer, wood-fire flavour to foods

LIEBFEUER is imported into Europe by the ELOS Group BV in Venlo, and sold in 3 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg bags.
